Volkswagen.
Volkswagen's Golf 8 Basis configurator works for browser agents at the deep path.
Found & recommended by AI agents
Search-class agents touched the close in some runs; the full agent-fleet access profile lands in a later wave.
This page measures the commerce lane: can an agent find Volkswagen, and once it arrives, transact. Talent, after-sales, procurement, investor and press lanes run on different surfaces and are not yet measured.
Your brand isn't measured yet
What does an AI agent do with your website?
The same measurement as Volkswagen, free for your domain. Five agent classes, one real task, your score in 48 hours.
The deep configurator still serves the Golf 8 Basis. The catalogue no longer points at it.
We asked five kinds of AI agent to configure a Volkswagen Golf 8 Basis at volkswagen.de. The plain reader pulled the model overview HTML, found T-Cross at €24,960 and T-Roc at €30,845 embedded server-side, but no Golf 8 Basis line at all. The coding agent navigated the configurator, clicked the Golf tile, reached trim selection, and extracted €33,465: the new Golf 2025, not the Golf 8 Basis the test asked for. The full browser went deeper, found the legacy Golf 8 Basis configurator intact, and pulled €29,395 with full configuration verification on three of three runs.
One label, many breeds. From a plain reader to an autonomous operator, the kinds behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude Code:
Blocked somewhere on the path: Coding agent. A customer whose assistant runs on one of those breeds never finishes the task.
Scope. This is one trim of one model in transition. Volkswagen offers Polo, T-Cross, T-Roc, Tiguan, Touareg, Passat, Arteon, plus ID. electric models and the new Golf 2025 generation now in the catalogue.
Found, and able to transact?
Two questions, measured separately. A brand can be recommended and still un-buyable, or perfectly buyable and never found.
When someone asks an agent to configure a car, does it route to Volkswagen?
Volkswagen comes up about four times in ten. The rest of the time, an agent recommends an alternative first.
Discoverability · 18-datapoint auditOnce an agent is on Volkswagen's site, can it book a test drive or place an order?
Search-class agents surface config-ready in some runs; the full agent-fleet access profile lands in a later wave.
Evidence · 70 / 100 A measure of how provable and consistent the result is, grounded in cross-method ground-truth agreement (the methods that ran returned the same price), not a separate measured run. A confidence layer on the two scores above, not a third sales axis.
What this means for Volkswagen.
On product discovery, Volkswagen has a healthy server-rendered surface and a configurator that works at the deep path. The gap is not architecture. It is catalogue drift: the discovery layer has moved on to the new Golf 2025, the legacy Golf 8 Basis still serves at the deep configurator path but the catalogue no longer points at it, so agents that don't go deep enough buy the wrong car. A coding agent confidently reports €33,465. The true Golf 8 Basis price is €29,395. The brand is correct. The trim is wrong.
The fix is not a configurator rewrite. It is a discovery-layer surface that disambiguates the model generation an agent is asking about, Reference Pages per trim with explicit availability and price stamps, Answer Pages that handle the "is this the Golf 8 or the Golf 2025" question before the configurator opens, and a freshness signal the agent can rely on to know which version it is reading.
The proof is not a deeper configurator. It is agents disambiguating Golf 8 from Golf 2025 on the first read and landing on the trim the buyer actually asked for, re-measured each wave.

No intermediary stands between agents and Volkswagen. The gap is being found, not the channel.
Channel position pending the Wave 4 Cody Gate-1 audit response analysis. The pre-measurement expectation, based on the wider volume-compact market, is that the haendlersuche network and autoscout24 absorb a meaningful share of compact-buyer intent; the measured Wave 4 task is a new-car Golf 8 Basis configuration on volkswagen.de itself, so any displacement found speaks to the volume-compact discovery slot specifically.

Volkswagen Golf 8 Basis
- Close state
- config-ready
- Bottleneck
- Catalogue drift: the discovery layer shifted to the new Golf 2025 (€33.465); the legacy Golf 8 Basis is reachable only at the deep configurator path (browser-agent 3 of 3 at €29.395).
Fairness note
Wave 4 Q2 2026 audit complete on a single task (Volkswagen Golf 8 Basis, config-ready close state), scored under the public Task Selection Doctrine. AI Visibility from Cody Gate-1 on an unbranded informational probe for compact volume new-cars. AI Usability derived from a fleet wave phases 1-3 (ceiling + http + coding + browser-agent, 2026-03-29); the act-phase was not captured in a fleet wave for VW, so the full_automation row of the agent_matrix is marked pending. Note: the catalogue drifted between the a fleet wave measurement and Wave 4; the legacy Golf 8 Basis still serves at the deep configurator path (browser-agent reached it on 3 of 3 runs at exactly €29.395 with full configuration verified), while the discovery surface has moved on to the new Golf 2025 (coding agent extracted €33.465). The story this measurement tells is catalogue drift, not surface failure. Fairness Review pending the sector fairness grid.
How the score was produced.
Discoverability is audit-pipeline-derived. 3-provider sample (openai, perplexity, anthropic), 3 query variants per task, 2 runs per variant · 18 valid datapoints scored against a five-state handoff cascade. [S1]
AI Usability is derived from the access-profile above (usability-derivation/v1): how far the best agent reached (close state) modulated by how many agent classes succeeded. The per-class profile is the truth; the score is a reproducible summary of it, not a separate rating. Fleet phases (HTTP / Coding / Browser / ACT) produce the profile. [S2]
Agent Success Score = (AI Visibility × 0.20) + (AI Usability × 0.70) + (Evidence × 0.10)
On a 0–100 scale, displayed 0–10. AI Usability bundles the agent's reach + completion; AI Visibility is audit-derived discoverability. Weighting is public; the per-prompt derivation is not.
